Studio Manger of Print, Paper, & Graphic Arts Department
The SMFA studio manager supports students and faculty by managing and maintaining the printmaking, papermaking, screenprinting, and graphic arts studios, including facilities, affiliated classrooms, analog and digital equipment, processes, documentation and training, and inventory of materials and supplies. Day-to-day responsibilites include the smooth and safe operation of all classrooms, darkrooms and studios with their attendant equipment and supplies, to support the academic and creative goals of faculty and student users. This includes providing technical support services to faculty and students, including conducting technical training and workshops.

As the manager and printer for the stationery and greeting card company, my duties included printing orders and custom work, mixing ink, organizing a clean and efficient print shop, tracking usage of shop consumables (ink, paper, solvents, etc), ensuring quality control, mediating effective communication between all parts of the company (printers, graphic design team, and fulfillment department), and maintaining the company’s antique printing presses.

During Amy Franceschini’s tenure as instructor and artist-in-residence at UW-Madison, I acted as her master printer, performing all tasks necessary for printing posters, fine artist prints, seed packets, and other ephemera relating to Franceschini’s current project, Seed Journey. Additionally, I served as her teaching assistant, aiding Franceschini in the implementation of her courses.

Silver Buckle Press

As press assistant at Silver Buckle Press, a working historical press in the UW Libraries, I was responsible for furthering the press’s mission of preserving the history of the printing press and encouraging public appreciation for typesetting. Under master printer Tracy Honn, my duties include day-to-day press maintenance, setting and distributing type, printing and editioning, assisting in the creation of original artwork and legacy projects, researching the history of printmaking in Wisconsin, and curating exhibitions of historical prints from the library archives in order to educate the public on the legacy of printmaking.

As the acting studio assistant, I was responsible caring for both the paper and letterpress studios, calibrating and maintaining studio equipment (including presses, paper beaters, foil stampers, etc), checking and ordering inventory, operating the polymer plate maker, and archiving material belonging to the department. In my other role as teaching assistant, I designed and implemented my own lessons and course assignments, taught basic printing and paper-making techniques, led discussions on history of print- and paper-making, and introduced students to basic book forms.

Zest Bakery

Lead Baker & Cake Decorator / San Carlos, CA
As a lead baker at a gluten-free and allergen aware bakery, lead bakers were charged with inventory, baking daily muffins, breads, pastas, and other gluten-free treats, preparation for the following day, as needed, clean-up activities including sweeping, mopping, washing dishes and wiping down equipment, as required, emptying recycles and garbage as needed, ensuring the front display case is well stocked prior to opening hours, accurately weighing and measure ing ingredients, and avoid cross-contamination using GMPs. As a cake decorator responsibilities include coming up with original designs and executing them in a timely fashion, ensuring all orders are double checked for accuracy, hand lettering cakes, creating custom decorations, preparing cakes for the correct order dates, and making sure all rush jobs were done in a timely manner. Both positions required managing assistants and making sure their duties were completed by the end of the work day.

As a printing assistant, duties included: stocking items in shop, reviewing current inventory, filling outgoing orders, designing window displays, working as a salesperson in floor sales, separating parent sheets, creating polymer plates, and organizing & dating completed orders.

As a studio assistant, duties included: aiding in the process of making paper (cooking, tearing down, and
beating pulp), pulling paper on a mold and deckle, and drying paper. Additional duties involved helping with the creation of lamps made from paper, creating and filling customer orders, installing projects, management of various business aspects, representing the company to potential clients, and collaborating with the owner on future projects and designs.
